ODSP medical transportation, explained.
If you're on ODSP and your medical travel costs $15 or more in a month, the program may cover it. Here's how that works and how we bill it.
The rule in plain terms
ODSP's Mandatory Special Necessities benefit can cover travel to treatment by a regulated health professional when the cost reaches $15 or more per month. It is approved in advance, not claimed afterwards as a surprise.
- Costs must reach $15 or more per benefit unit in a given month
- The travel must be to a regulated health professional
- A health professional confirms the trips are medically necessary
- Your caseworker approves it on the MSN application form
Why pay-direct matters
ODSP can arrange to pay an approved vendor directly rather than reimbursing you after the fact. That is the arrangement worth asking your worker for, because it means you never front the money.
- You are not out of pocket at the door
- We invoice the program, not you
- Trip records and receipts kept on file for your worker
- Recurring treatment trips set up once and left in place
Common questions
What do I need to get started?
Speak to your ODSP caseworker and ask about the Mandatory Special Necessities benefit for medical transportation. You'll need the form and verification from your health professional.
Does it cover a taxi or a wheelchair van?
The program covers reasonable transportation costs, and where a wheelchair-accessible vehicle is the only workable option, that's what it reimburses.
Can you help with the paperwork?
We can provide trip records, quotes and receipts in whatever format your worker needs. We can't apply on your behalf.
